1. Clickthrough Rate

Clickthrough rate (CTR) is likely the first answer you’ll get when you ask an email marketer what metrics they track. It’s what I like to call the "day-to-day" email marketing metric, because it lets you easily calculate performance for every individual email you send. From there, you can track how your CTR changes over time.

Clickthrough rate is a very important metric for all email marketers to be tracking, as it gives you direct insight into how many people on your list are engaging with your content and interested in learning more about your brand or your offer. 2. Conversion Rate

After an email recipient has clicked through on your email, the next goal is typically to get them to convert on your offer — in other words, to take the action that your email has asked them to take. So if you’re sending an email to offer your audience the chance to download, say, a free ebook, you’d consider anyone who actually downloads that ebook to be a conversion.

Because your definition of a conversion is directly tied to the call-to-action in your email, and your call-to-action should be directly tied to the overall goal of your email marketing, conversion rate is one of the most important metrics for determining the extent to which you’re achieving your goals. (We’ll discuss more specific goal-related metrics later.)

In order to measure conversion rate on your emails, you’ll need to integrate your email platform and your web analytics. You can do this by creating unique tracking URLs for your email links that identify the source of the click as coming from a specific email campaign.

3. Bounce Rate

Soft bounces are the result of a temporary problem with a valid email address, such as a full inbox or a problem with the recipient’s server. The recipient’s server may hold these emails for delivery once the problem clears up, or you may try re-sending your email message to soft bounces.

Hard bounces are the result of an invalid, closed, or non-existent email address, and these emails will never be successfully delivered. You should immediately remove hard bounce addresses from your email list, because internet service providers (ISPs) use bounce rates as one of the key factors to determine an email sender’s reputation.

While a bounce rate doesn’t directly link to your goals, you should still look at it to make sure there are no deep issues with your emails. Aside from the call-to-action metrics (CTR, conversion rates), you’ll also want to be keeping tabs on your list growth and loss. Of course, you should be aiming to grow your list in order to extend your reach, expand your audience, and position yourself as an industry thought leader.

5. Email Sharing/Forwarding Rate

Why? Because this is how you generate new contacts. The folks on your email list are already in your database. So while conversion is still a primary focus, this doesn’t help you attract new leads. Encourage your readers to pass along your email to a friend or colleague if they found the content useful, and start tracking how many new people you can add to your database this way. 6. Overall ROI

As with every marketing channel, you should be able to determine the overall ROI of your email marketing. If you haven’t yet, set up an SLA system whereby you assign different values to various types of leads based on their likelihood to generate revenue for your company.

How many of each of these types of leads did you generate via email marketing? How does this translate to potential revenue? Actual revenue? These are the types of metrics that will help you show your boss and your sales team how valuable email marketing is as a channel that drives real, tangible results.

7. Open Rate

Most email marketers are still bent over backwards trying to optimize their subject lines for higher open rates. While this can have a positive impact — and more opens are a great thing — they really should be focused on optimizing their clickthrough rates, instead.

The fact of the matter is that open rate is actually a very misleading metric for a few reasons. Most importantly, an email is only counted as "opened" if the recipient also receives the images embedded in that message. And a large percentage of your email users likely have image-blocking enabled on their email client. This means that even if they open the email, they won’t be included in your open rate, making it an inaccurate and unreliable metric for marketers, as it underreports on your true numbers.

You can get some value out of open rate as a metric if you use it as a comparative metric. For instance, if you compare the open rates of this week’s email send to last week’s email send (both to the same lists) it might give you some insight since the variables are somewhat controlled.

8. Unsubscribe Rate

As with open rate, the unsubscribe rate isn’t a reliable picture of the health of your email list. Many subscribers who are tired of receiving email messages from your brand won’t bother to go through the formal unsubscribe process. They’ll just stop opening, reading, and clicking on your email messages.

That’s why it’s much more effective to measure subscriber engagement by clickthrough rates and conversion rates. From there, you can keep an eye out on unengaged subscribers so you can consider removing them at some point, like we went over earlier.

There are two major reports that will tell you most of what you need to know about your emailing, including both deliverability performance and campaign performance. These reports were created in Exponea, but you should be able to recreate them in the analytics program of your choice.

Email domain report

The first one is the email domain report , which shows you metrics for specific recipient domains. This will help you see any deliverability issues with a particular mailbox provider – and you can use open rate variance metric here. If a certain provider shows 30% lower open rate than the other, this is most likely due to bad inbox placement. Similarly, if there is any spike for soft bounces or hard bounces, you should look into what is causing those issues.

Campaign report

The second perspective, which uses mostly the same set of metrics in a different format, is the campaign report. You can get this report by using the previous Email domain report, but in rows, you should use “campaign > campaign_name” instead of “email_domain”. You can also add “campaign > subject” as an extra row, in case you want to see the subject lines used, or if you tested various subject lines.

If you spot any problems in the campaign / email domain report, you can use the following report to investigate further. This will help you understand where soft or hard bounces are coming from: is it bad email list health or is your content being blocked?

Open and click time report

To help you understand when customers are opening or clicking on your emails, and whether this is in line with their usual shopping time, you can build the following report. You will see most of the opens and clicks happen after sending the campaign, but you might find out that this isn’t when your customers typically do their shopping. You can then use optimal send time prediction to manage this for you, or manually adjust the campaign launch times.

Here you could benefit from using optimal send time prediction, as this would make sure every customer receives an email at their optimal time. If this prediction isn’t available to you, you can also use this for the segmentation of morning and evening shoppers, and send campaigns at two different times for these two segments.

1. Schedule time to check your numbers

Make an appointment with yourself at the end of each month to look at your email analytics. Track the most important numbers—the statistics we discussed in the last section of this guide—in a spreadsheet. List both numbers for individual emails and the overall numbers.

Customer profiles are tools to help you understand your audience. To do this, you create a fictional person who represents a specific segment of your existing or potential audience. Every business should have a minimum of three profiles to work with:

If your product or service appeals to several different groups of people, you may also want to create multiple profiles in each category. For example, if you sell high quality cookware, you might want to create one “best customer” profile for young adults moving into their first home and another profile for stay at home moms.

Over time, you can use the data in your email analytics to add new categories to these profiles. For example, you might want to add categories for products/services most often reviewed by your best customers.

In some instances, you’ll want to create entirely new customer profiles. For example, if you run a major lead generation campaign and get several hundred new subscribers in a specific part of the world, you might want to create a profile to represent them.

Lead generation campaigns are marketing campaigns designed to funnel people from your website and/or social media platforms to your email list. These campaigns can be simple, like putting a form in the sidebar of your website, or complex, like a multi-network social media campaign.

  • Use multiple types of signup forms. Specifically, consider adding a pop up or slide-in form that appears when your audience performs a certain action, like finishing an article on your site. To do this, go back to the notes you made during the reflection step. Specifically, pay attention to the highest and lowest-performing content types. You might even want to pull up individual emails to get a better feel for the design, copy, and offers contained within those emails.

  • What makes certain content types more popular? Is the content itself more useful than other types of emails you send? Does the email template you use for specific content look better on mobile devices? Are you using more effective subject lines on certain emails?
  • Can you apply these lessons to other content types? For example, if shorter emails are more successful with your list, can you find ways to shorten all of your emails? Can you re-use design elements from one type of email in other emails? Is there an effective format for subject lines that can be applied to multiple email types?
  • Can you change your content plan to focus more on popular content types? For example, if you run an educational newsletter and “Quick Tips” perform better than longer lessons, can you switch to only publishing quick tips, with links to longer content on your site?
  • Can you introduce new content types? Are there ways you can expand your content to better serve your audience? Can you build on some of your popular content to create something new?

Let’s explore some of the top email marketing KPIs using a hypothetical small business undergoing some marketing optimization as an example. Let’s imagine an ecommerce business that also does live events to promote its products.

Their email list has recently reached 1,500. And after a good quarter, the owner has decided to expand its marketing budget to make room for hiring a freelance copywriter and graphic designer to create brand-appropriate communication.

Open rate

This email tracking metric records the percentage of emails that were actually opened by the recipient. An opened email means that something about the headline grabbed the recipient’s attention. So it’s good to know exactly which headlines got an opening click, and which didn’t.

Experts agree that the average person gets about 121 emails per day. Most of those don’t even get opened. If your marketing team has crafted a sales email subject line that actually inspires the recipient to open it, it’s worth trying to replicate that same angle and see if it gets the same result.

Up until now, our business owner has been writing their own email headlines and copy. Their last email campaign was sent out to all 1,500 subscribers. Of the emails sent out, 350 bounced back, and only 10 were opened.

With a new open rate of over 15%, our fake ecommerce business is now performing better than industry benchmarks for food and beverage. At the very least, this email engagement metric reveals that the copywriter’s headlines are resonating with the subscriber list.

Clickthrough rate

The clickthrough rate—or CTR—is the percentage of how many recipients clicked on a link contained in one of your marketing emails. This metric is excellent for measuring engagement—but at around 2-3%, average click-through rates are much lower than average open rates.

Marketing emails typically contain a call to action (CTA), which is a direction for the next step the recipient should take if they’re interested in the product or service. And usually, the CTA points to an embedded link that brings the recipient to another location, like an appointment schedule app or enrollment website.

Our online business has improved its email open rate to 15%, just by crafting better headlines. Let’s also say that the subscriber list has grown by 100. Now, the owner wants to improve the number of recipients taking the desired next step.

Throughout February, the owner has plans to send out a sequence of 3 emails advertising its exclusive Valentine’s Day live webinar. The email’s CTA—an embedded link—brings recipients to a page where they can reserve a place for two with a $10 deposit to hold their spot.

After the event takes place, the owner wants to know exactly what percentage of subscribers actually clicked the link and followed through to the form. They’ll calculate the clickthrough rate using this formula:

At about 4%, this clickthrough rate would actually be considered above average. When metrics fall above average like this, it’s wise to take note of whatever practices were going on at that time. Because if something is working, you need to be able to replicate it. A high click-through rate indicates that the copy and/or the visuals of the email were compelling enough to inspire further action.

Conversion rate

Your conversion rate is the percentage of people who not only opened your email and clicked through to the next step, but also performed the desired end result. That end result might be filling in a form to enroll for a free webinar or demo, or outright purchasing the product. If the subscriber ultimately performs the action the email was intended to inspire, then that’s considered a conversion.

Obviously, then, part of optimizing your emails is making sure that every single one has a clear call to action and specific desired end result. Tracking conversation rates isn’t as straightforward as open or click-through rates. That’s because what constitutes a conversion depends on the goals you assigned to each campaign.

In the example from above, our fake online ecommerce business sent a February email chain promoting its Valentine’s Day live virtual event. We already determined that 50 people clicked through and opened the enrollment form. Of those 50 who opened it, 30 filled it in. So now, the conversion rate formula looks like this:

The conversion rate is 2.4%. As the owner continues running marketing campaigns for similar events in the future, tracking conversion rate metrics will give a good indication of how well their subscribers are responding to the actual content being offered.

The best email analytics strategies

Here are some useful strategies for approaching and using email analysis to optimize your messaging. Keep in mind as you read these strategies that every subscriber base is different, and therefore some approaches may ring more true for some populations than for others. Consider your company’s unique buyer persona and ask yourself how well each strategy would apply to your process.

Organizations that send personalized, segmented and targeted email campaigns see 17% more revenue than marketers who don’t. This means you should be doing everything in your power to tailor your emails with names, titles, relevant interests, and other data that will say, “Hey! You know me!”

Think of your subscriber’s email inbox as a big party. You and all the other businesses stand in a corner trying to get the subscriber’s attention, which creates a whole lot of noise. Even something as simple as calling out the right name will help you stick out from the crowd. Using a good CRM will help you collect and access the kind of information you can use to personalize messaging. That way your emails can land in inboxes one step ahead of the others.

Whatever call to action you include in your emails, make sure the next step can be performed on a mobile device. Plus, make sure that the format and copy you’re using in your emails looks neat and well organized on a mobile device screen.

Additionally, when tracking your email analytics metrics, make sure to monitor engagement on mobile devices vs. engagement on computers. People spend a lot of time on their mobile devices, and if your marketing efforts aren’t including mobile usage, you could be missing out on clicks simply because you aren’t expanding your messaging to the right platforms.

Depending on your industry, there are different kinds of content you should add to your marketing campaigns to inspire higher email engagement metrics. You can have blogs, video tutorials, ebooks, podcasts, special offers, and more – all to entice your recipients to take some kind of action.

The more content you have, the more you can offer to your subscriber list and see which ones get the most interaction. You can then gauge the effectiveness of your content by running A/B tests and offering different kinds of content.

Even if you have a wealth of fascinating content, resist the temptation to throw it all out at once. The more data you have on how well your emails are performing, the better. But that doesn’t mean you should start cranking emails out just for the sake of collecting information to use for optimizing your emails.

If you go too far with sending out campaigns, you easily risk annoying your subscribers. Test out different intervals of sending emails, and take note of how often seems to be too often. Currently, one to two emails per week seems to be the goldilocks region. Fewer than that, and you could miss out on potential sales. More, and you risk ending up in the spam folder or unsubscribe list.

One of the best things you can do to boost optimization using analytics is to segment your subscribers. However you generate leads, you should be using your CRM to capture and store critical points of information about every contact. Then, you can use this data to segment lead populations according to things like interests, demographics, and locations. This lets you create even more targeting marketing campaigns, so that every communication you send resonates with the person it’s intended for.

Best and Worst Charities for Your Donations

Editor’s Note: Consumer Reports has not updated the specific charities mentioned in this story since November 2019. If you’re looking for tips on choosing a charity, you can vet the charities you’re considering by checking the websites of the watchdog organizations mentioned here.

“You don’t want to choose a charity by the name alone, since your donation may go to a questionable group,” says Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the charity watchdog BBB Wise Giving Alliance. Some organizations may spend too much on administrative and fundraising costs or are outright scammers.

Vetting charities is especially important now because December is typically the largest month for giving. According to a recent report by the Blackbaud Institute for Philanthropic Impact, 17 percent of contributions were made during December last year.

By doing this vetting, you can feel more confident that the group you’re donating to deserves your support. Charities differ a lot in how much of the money they raise goes for programs instead of covering the expense of raising money.

To become accredited by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, charities must meet 20 standards, including adequate board oversight and strong conflict-of-interest policies, as well as the requirement that they spend at least 65 percent of their total expenses on their charitable programs and no more than 35 percent of their total contributions on fundraising.

For example, CharityWatch gave the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, which spent only 4 percent on its programs, an F, while the National Military Family Association, which spent 82 percent, received an A.

We looked for a consensus among all three watchdogs. However, in some cases we included groups that were evaluated by just two. If a group was not accredited by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, it was not included in our list of top-rated charities, although it may be included on our list of low-rated charities, which received poor grades from the other watchdogs.

Keep in mind that our table below is a partial list of high- and low-rated charities in only some categories. You can find more by going to the watchdogs’ websites directly—just enter a group’s name in the search box. CharityWatch is the only one of the three that requires visitors to make a donation for full access to its reports, although it provides a list of its top-rated charities and other useful information free of charge.

Be sure to check the charity’s own website for information about its mission, a list of the board of directors, and its latest financial reports. If the site doesn’t have those details, “it is sending you a message that the organization is not very transparent,” Weiner says. (Read more about vetting charity documents.)

Company Culture.

The academic literature on the subject is vast. Our review of it revealed many formal definitions of organizational culture and a variety of models and methods for assessing it. Numerous processes exist for creating and changing it. Agreement on specifics is sparse across these definitions, models, and methods, but through a synthesis of seminal work by Edgar Schein, Shalom Schwartz, Geert Hofstede, and other leading scholars, we have identified four generally accepted attributes:

Understanding Corporate Culture

Alphabet (GOOGL), the parent of Google, is well known for its employee-friendly corporate culture. It explicitly defines itself as unconventional and offers perks such as telecommuting, flextime, tuition reimbursement, free employee lunches, and on-site doctors. At its corporate headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., the company offers on-site services such as oil changes, car washes, massages, fitness classes, and a hairstylist. Its corporate culture helped it to consistently earn a high ranking on Fortune magazine’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

Awareness of corporate or organizational culture in businesses and other organizations such as universities emerged in the 1960s. The term corporate culture developed in the early 1980s and became widely known by the 1990s. Corporate culture was used during those periods by managers, sociologists, and other academics to describe the character of a company.

This included generalized beliefs and behaviors, company-wide value systems, management strategies, employee communication, and relations, work environment, and attitude. Corporate culture would go on to include company origin myths via charismatic chief executive officers (CEOs), as well as visual symbols such as logos and trademarks.

By 2015, corporate culture was not only created by the founders, management, and employees of a company, but was also influenced by national cultures and traditions, economic trends, international trade, company size, and products.

There are a variety of terms that relate to companies affected by multiple cultures, especially in the wake of globalization and the increased international interaction of today’s business environment. As such, the term cross-culture refers to “the interaction of people from different backgrounds in the business world”; culture shock refers to the confusion or anxiety people experience when conducting business in a society other than their own; and reverse culture shock is often experienced by people who spend lengthy times abroad for business and have difficulty readjusting upon their return.

To create positive cross-culture experiences and facilitate a more cohesive and productive corporate culture, companies often devote in-depth resources, including specialized training, that improves cross-culture business interactions.

Examples of Contemporary Corporate Cultures

Just as national cultures can influence and shape corporate culture, so can a company’s management strategy. In top companies of the 21st century, such as Google, Apple Inc. (AAPL), and Netflix Inc. (NFLX), less traditional management strategies such as fostering creativity, collective problem solving, and greater employee freedom have been the norm and thought to contribute to their business success.

Progressive policies such as comprehensive employee benefits and alternatives to hierarchical leadership—even doing away with closed offices and cubicles—are a trend that reflects a more tech-conscious, modern generation. This trend marks a change from aggressive, individualistic, and high-risk corporate cultures such as that of former energy company Enron.

High-profile examples of alternative management strategies that significantly affect corporate culture include holacracy, which has been put to use at shoe company Zappos (AMZN), and agile management techniques applied at music streaming company Spotify.

Holacracy is an open management philosophy that, among other traits, eliminates job titles and other such traditional hierarchies. Employees have flexible roles and self-organization, and collaboration is highly valued. Zappos instituted this new program in 2014 and has met the challenge of the transition with varying success and criticism.

Similarly, Spotify, a music-streaming service, uses the principles of agile management as part of its unique corporate culture. Agile management, in essence, focuses on deliverables with a flexible, trial-and-error strategy that often groups employees in a start-up environment approach to creatively tackle the company’s issues at hand.

What is Company Culture?

Company culture can more simply be described as the shared ethos of an organization. It’s the way people feel about the work they do, the values they believe in, where they see the company going and what they’re doing to get it there. Collectively, these traits represent the personality — or culture — of an organization.

The environment in which they spend that time will largely dictate the quality of an employee’s professional life. If they work for a company with a strong culture that aligns with their own beliefs and attitudes, they’ll be more likely to work hard and remain with the company for the long haul. If, on the other hand, the company’s culture does not reflect their own personal feelings, they’re much more likely to leave — or worse, remain with the company but underperform.

Your core values – Core values are certainly part of your culture, but until you put them into action they’re just words on paper. In fact, core values can negatively impact culture if they aren’t adhered to. Employees will see this as the company paying lip service and failing to live up to its own standards.

Your perks and benefits – Ping pong tables and beer on tap can be great, assuming they represent what your employees really care about, but perks and benefits are not a substitute for strong company culture.

The yardstick by which all candidates should be measured – Hiring for cultural fit has become a hot topic over the past few years, but we’re already seeing companies shift away from this line of thought. Hiring people that align with your culture makes sense on the surface, but too many companies use this “metric” as a crutch. Many companies have pivoted to a “cultural add” model, wherein they look for candidates that align with the most important elements of their culture, but will also bring their own unique traits to the table.

A successful company culture is one that is bought into by everyone from the newest intern to the CEO. It’s living and breathing your core values. The job of the company is to make sure that every employee understands the expectations and acts accordingly. A truly great company culture is one that inherently promotes curiosity, respect, teamwork and employee health.

A way to really boost your company’s culture is to put a concerted emphasis on diversity and inclusion. In simplified terms, diversity and inclusion in the workplace is making a group of individuals, with completely different backgrounds and experiences, feel safe and accepted in expressing their uniqueness while at work. Allowing employees to express their differences, learn from each other and feel safe while doing it creates a strong cultural bond that breeds employee happiness and productivity.

Putting It All Together

All four levers came together at a traditional manufacturer that was trying to become a full solutions provider. The change started with reformulating the strategy and was reinforced by a major brand campaign. But the president understood that the company’s culture represented the biggest barrier to change and that the top leaders were the greatest lever for evolving the culture.

The culture was characterized by a drive for results followed by caring and purpose, the last of which was unusually strong for the industry. One employee described the company as “a talented and committed group of people focused on doing good for the planet, with genuine desire, support, and encouragement to make a difference in the community.” Whereas the broader culture was highly collaborative, with flat decision making, leaders were seen as top-down, hierarchical, and sometimes political, which discouraged risk taking.

The top leaders reviewed their culture’s strengths and the gaps in their own styles and discussed what was needed to achieve their strategic aspirations. They agreed that they needed more risk taking and autonomy and less hierarchy and centralized decision making. The president restructured the leadership team around strong business line leaders, freeing up time to become a better advocate for the culture and to focus more on customers.

About the Research

We undertook a comprehensive study of organizational culture and outcomes to explore the link between them. We analyzed the cultures of more than 230 companies along with the leadership styles and values of more than 1,300 executives across a range of industries (including consumer discretionary, consumer staples, energy and utilities, financial and professional services, health care, industrials, and IT and telecommunications), regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, Oceania, and South America), and organizational types (public, private, and nonprofit). We diagnosed those cultures using online survey responses from approximately 25,000 employees together with interviews of company managers.

Our analysis highlighted how strongly each of the eight styles defined the organizations in our study. Results ranked first, and caring second. This pattern is consistent across company types, company sizes, regions, and industries. Order and learning ranked among the third and fourth most common styles in many cultures.

Culture appears to most directly affect employee engagement and motivation, followed by customer orientation. To model its relationship to organizational outcomes, we assessed employee engagement levels for all the companies using widely accepted survey questions and arrived at customer-orientation scores with an online questionnaire. In many cases we also documented top leaders’ individual styles and values.

We found that employee engagement is most strongly related to greater flexibility, in the form of enjoyment, learning, purpose, and caring. Similarly, we observed a positive relationship between customer orientation and those four styles plus results. These relationships, too, are surprisingly consistent across companies. We also found that engagement and customer orientation are stronger when employees are in close agreement about the culture’s characteristics.

Our research was influenced by the work of countless scholars in this field, many of whom are mentioned in this article. In addition, we stand on the shoulders of giants such as David Caldwell, Jennifer Chatman, James Heskett, John Kotter, Charles O’Reilly, and many, many others who have inspired our thinking.

The top team then invited a group of 100 middle managers into the conversation through a series of biannual leadership conferences. The first one established a platform for input, feedback, and the cocreation of an organizational change plan with clear cultural priorities. The president organized these managers into teams focused on critical business challenges. Each team was required to go outside the company to source ideas, to develop solutions, and to present its findings to the group for feedback. This initiative placed middle managers in change roles that would traditionally have been filled by vice presidents, giving them greater autonomy in fostering a learning-based culture. The intent was to create real benefits for the business while evolving the culture.

The president also initiated a program to identify employees who had positive disruptive ideas and working styles. These people were put on project teams that addressed key innovation priorities. The teams immediately began improving business results, both in core commercial metrics and in culture and engagement. After only one year employee engagement scores jumped a full 10 points, and customer Net Promoter Scores reached an all-time high—providing strong client references for the company’s new and innovative solutions.

If you’ve been streamlining blog production and are stuck at how to write a blog post outline, know that you’re at the right place. Because, today, we’ll share not just ways to write an outline, but also sprinkle in tips to creating one.

But first, why create a blog post outline? Kasia Kowalska from Contentki answers this for you: “Outlines layout the main takeaways and the structure of the intended piece nicely, which allows choosing the best-fitting SEO keywords.

Secondly, if you’re working on an article with another person or team, outlines let you collect their feedback and internal insights before you write the first draft. This reduces the number of comments or change requests in the written piece to the absolute minimum.”

How to Outline a Blog Post

1. Nail your working title.

My colleague Corey wrote an awesome post about how to pick a great working title. Go read it, now. I won’t go too much into the weeds here (that’s why you should read her post), but a great working title is specific. It’s "How to Use Images to Generate Leads on Twitter," not " Twitter lead generation."

Spend time getting your working title to something specific and easy to tackle in a blog post format — but don’t waste time getting nitpicky. You can refine your title later. The goal here is to have a title that gives you a very clear idea of what the whole piece is about. You can make it sound catchy later.

2. Write down as many distinct takeaways from the article as you can.

Next, you get to brain dump. Write down all the things you want your readers to get out of the article. These won’t always be the main sections of your article — it’s just all the things you want your readers to know by the end of reading your post.

This is the only time in the whole process you’re not worried about organization — just let your ideas flow naturally. You need to get out all of your wild and crazy ideas now so they won’t muck up your post later in the process.

Let’s use the previous example to show you what I mean. If my working title was "How to Use Images to Generate Leads on Twitter," I’d probably want readers to know:

3. Break up those takeaways into larger sections.

Now, we’ll take that jumble of ideas and place them into overarching sections. Think of it like sorting laundry — each thought belongs to a different pile. From your brainstorm, you should come up with a few big themes. Sometimes, one of your brainstorming bullets will be a theme in itself, but usually several bullets will fall under one overarching theme. You may also realize that there’s a theme that you may not have any bullets for, but the post definitely calls for it.

Lots of people recommend sticking to 3-4 larger sections, but it really depends on what type of post you’re writing. If you’re writing something that’s long and comprehensive, you might need more. If it’s a quick post, fewer sections would be ideal. But if you need a benchmark, 3-4 sections are fine.

Make sure you include social sharing icons on your blog so your readers can easily share it to their social media profiles. That is a great way to get your blogs exposed to a bigger audience.

Just think if you could get one person who has a following of two million people to share your article. Just think what that could do for your business.

So make sure you put your content on the social media channels that your audience is active. For example, you could go ive and talk about your new blog on the new Clubhouse app if your audience was active there.

Step 7: Publish + Promote

Hit publish and make sure to spend more time promoting your blog posts than you do writing blog content. This is super important for the success of your blog.

There are other people who say promote 90% and create 10% and many other theories, but the point is to make sure you spend more time promoting your content than you do creating it.

Templates

HubSpot’s Fill In The Blanks Template. This is a good template for a basic blog post, but it’s short and it’s very, well, template-like. It can get you something serviceable in the 500-1,000 word range, but you really want to take the whole thing and expand it for a good modern blog post.

Content Rules’ Homework Sheet. This is a PDF from Content Rules with a template that works more like a worksheet. It lines up each element of a blog post and has you fill in what you’d want in that place, with some simple guidelines.

Writers Write’s Post Template. This template is an infographic-style rundown of the elements of a blog post, in a compelling layout and order. It can help you with both layouts and with rationalizing the different parts of a post.

Outline Bullet Points

I’ll say one thing before I let you go, though; template-based blog posts aren’t all that great. When you’re relying on a template, you’re removing your voice and style from the equation. You’ll have a better return if you simply hire a talented writer to do your blogging for you, at that point. Templates can be a good place to start, but the more of the template that’s left in the end, the less effective the blog post will be.

The View Through a Drinking Straw

So I just handed in what should be the final revision of SINISTER SCENES, Book Three of THE JOY OF SPOOKING to my editor. Happy day, right? Well, I’m not breaking out the party blowers just yet. First I have to wind down. There’s something about the final stage of the process of writing a novel that reminds me of walking home in a blizzard. It’s stressful, slow-going, and if you lose the road at some point, you’re in big, big trouble.

Actually I’m starting to wonder if writing novels is giving me a weird compulsion to use goofy similes and metaphors to explain just about everything in life. Yikes! For instance, the other day in a bit of a cheeky interview over at Literary Asylum, I was describing the process as being like building a house. The gist of what I said was this: to first assemble a basic structure without worrying about it looking like an ugly shack, because if you work too long and hard on making the front door look nice, it’s then horribly discouraging to discover it opens onto nothing.

Staying with that, how does an author know when they’re finished the job? With a house, it’s easy to tell: it’s when they start stuffing the mail slot with tax bills and realtor flyers. But with a novel, it’s not quite so obvious. Sure, the printout looks thick enough (on that note, why after a single read can you never ever get the stack quite square again, despite any number of karate chops to the edges?). But did you forget something? Did you make it the best it can be?

Now, my wife is an illustrator and whenever she thinks she’s finished a painting, she’ll stand back and take a good long look at it. If something bugs her, she’ll fix it; if something looks unfinished, she’ll give it a little more attention. Evaluating the state of a novel is exactly the same process, I always say — except that instead of standing back and seeing what you’ve got, you spend hours peering at the colors and composition of your supposedly finished picture through a drinking straw.

Eventually, perhaps after poking your eyeball one time too many, you’ll give up and pronounce it good enough. But is it really? You have no idea. You’ll only know when a bunch of friends, colleagues, and strangers start breaking out their own straws and having a good close look themselves.

Still, it’s always a relief to finish up. Just like it’s always a relief to find your way home and shake the snow off.
